Prologue: Xavier Trout placed his hands on the dossier and photos that he had used in the briefing and leaned forward. "I'm telling you Matt, he's alive! Dale's alive!" Shepherd's heart sank into the pit of his stomach. He refused to believe it. It just couldn't be true. "But that's impossible! I saw him go down with my own eyes! Those things were everywhere! He had no ammo, he was stumbling around like a zombie carrying that empty shotgun! He was toast! I don't care how well trained he was!" "You don't understand Matt! Plausible deniability! He had to make you believe that he was dead -- that there was no chance of survival! That was the only way that he could successfully move on to his next assignment!" "Next assignment? What do you mean! That was years ago! What has he been doing?" Matt suddenly tensed up. "And more importantly, why are you telling me this now?" "I need you to work with Dale again Matt." Matt fought back an overwhelming wave of nausea. "Oh no! No way, Trout! Dale is a madman! He's completely unstable! I'd rather work with Deke on this one! You think Deke is a Wildcard? Well, Dale makes Deke look like a cub scout with a pointed stick!" Don't worry Matt, I'll keep Dale at a safe distance but he will be supplying intel and cover for your mission." Matt thought to himself -- Intel? Dale? That's an oxymoron if ever he had heard one. Trout rambled on, "Several years back, Dale was assigned a deep undercover mission to keep tabs on one of the world's lesser known cruel despotic dictators... Momar Daffy." "Daffy, huh?" Matt had heard that name before. "That's right Matt, Daffy... the cruelest, most vicious, evil dictators in an unnamed country of 256 colors or less. The common chatter at the Pentagon is that Daffy is stockpiling a secret cache of biological weapons. But there is no real proof. Dale seems to think that it's something else... something bigger. I need you to go in and get definitive proof, Matt." "Well," Matt muttered as though he were not entirely convinced, "Dale did almost sort of save my life once... he sort of almost got me killed a few times too but what are you gonna do?" "That's the spirit Matt! Dale will be in constant radio contact. He has a helicopter standing by for immediate dust-off when you accomplish your objectives." "That doesn't sound too bad, Dale always was a crack pilot! Just so long as he isn't carrying any weapons." "Well..." Matt threw his hands up in the air and took three threatening steps toward Trout. "Oh, crap! What now? What!?!" "Dale will also provide ground cover for you should you need it... it seems that he has managed to get a hold of a few Scud missiles from Daffy's artillery depot." "Aw-man, Trout! That's it! I get hazard pay!" "Whatever you say Matt! Just find out what Daffy is up to. If it turns out that he does have any weapons of mass destruction, it is imperative that you take them out. You leave at 0100 hours. And remember Matt..." "In know Trout, I know... plausible deniability." Especially at the start of map 1... there are 3 large outdoor areas there [before the fort] and it is easy to miss needed weapons, especially if dropped into water, etc. by monster. Most weapons are not repeated later! -some trees, vines, pipes. etc are climeable. -explore all areas well before moving on -the sewer grate at the bottom of the big drain pipe is not meant to open, nor does it. -to get Dale to try to blow the fort door open keep running back and forth around the big area outside the fort and then up to the door until Dale gets 'the picture' and you hear him radio you about blowing the door. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ HOW TO RUN "SOF: Mission 3 -- Operation: Desert Bloom!": Create a sofm3 directory under your Quake2 directory and parallel to baseq2 as per following diagram.
